ATTU: Staying together

dsc_0646-2

‘Staying together’, awash with soaring vocals, uplifting guitar riffs and bitter sweet lyrics is the fabulous teaser track for what to expect from North Londoner ‘Stefan Antoinette’s DIY project ATTU in 2017. It is a feelgood yet at times melancholic melody shows a lot of promise and we hope that this talented 5 piece band comprising Stefan Antoinette himself, Chike Newman on bass, keys, samples and backing vocals, Joel Mayes on guitar/bass and backing vocals, Millie Wilson on keys, samples and backing vocals and Sean Poole on drums can continue to deliver on this early promise in the near future. We wish the band all the very best and here is the track:

Verdensrommet: Aldri igjen EP

_DSC7455_DxO
The Norwegian indie-pop band Verdensrommet is back with another EP, and this time they’re joined by Emir Hindic, aka. Onge $ushimane (from the rap duo $ushi x Kobe). The EP features the track Aldri igjen (Never Again in English) and several remixes of the same. This is a track that essentially has no coherent structure or form and has random manifestations of multiple genres (electronica, ambient, hip hop, etc) coexisting and at times fighting for supremacy. It hits you hard and the remixes are as pleasingly diverse as chalk and cheese. Definitely not meant for a sunny afternoon stroll, but walk down some of the graffiti lined streets of a metropolis with this in your earphones after sunset and you’ll be one with your urbaniverse.
The whole EP can be streamed from: https://open.spotify.com/album/03dB87F294CPsspYKE0Ooa or the soundcloud link which you can figure out using the stuff we have embedded below.

Below are a few of our favourites from this EP:

Affairs : Play

Affairs deal with the complexities that affairs of the heart bring about when companionship devolves into one-upmanship. Solid synth, powerful rendition in a voice that screams melancholy and angst in equal parts, this is a thoroughly engaging single from the Manchester based band who, unlike the theme of the song, seem to be truly United. Play is produced by Suede, White Lies and Pulp producer Ed Buller and recorded at The Kinks’ legendary Konk Studios. Give it up for Dan ‘Scintillating Synths’ Parker, Michael ‘Humming Drums that certainly aren’t humdrum’ Bradnam and Jim ‘Vitalising vocal vibrations’Robinson :

Thyrsday: Touche

DSC_0889

Very seldom does one come across a track that has the appropriate smuggness, chutzpah, emotional backstory and musical quality that could make it a potential candidate to be part of the soundtrack to a Tarantino movie. ‘Touche’, the titletrack from the soon to be released (EP) by Sydney based Thyrsdayband, is a story in itself and so much more. Lead singer and songwriter Nikki Malvar has a great playful voice that communicates so much between the lines than the lyrics seem to suggest. This vocal quality is perfect accompaniment for the brilliant bluesy riff, that is catchy as hell and paints an exquisite picture of a different time and setting. This was the teaser track from the EP, which will feature six tracks in all and is expected to be out on 15.12.2014. We shall wait with bated breath and until then make do with this musical masterpiece:

Bella Loka: Escape (EP)

A powerful husky voice, sometimes almost classical, sometimes straight out of the 80’s! Camden Town, London based synth-pop husband/wife duo Tea and David Boothby combine wonderfully to belt out crazily beautiful winners in their musical avatar, which is aptly titled: Bella Loka! Their first EP Escape bounces Tea’s gorgeous voice against infectious vibrant melodies, sometimes almost satirically cheerful and at others appropriately ambient. Give it a listen, croon and buy some tunes:

Park Planet latest album ‘Too tired to sleep’ featuring a number of great tracks like ‘A little bit longer’, ‘All you need’, ‘Circles’, etc is due to be released next month. To promote this album they have come out with a delectable selection of  freely downloadable remixes of the tracks featured on the album. We liked the remixes a lot and wish Park Planet a lot of success with the album. Some of the remixes, which you could download for free:

Starar: Summit (New EP)

London based sibling duo Starar have recently released two scorchers for tracks for their EP titled Summit. Whether it is the classy but subtle interplay between the saxophone and the ‘ever-so-smooth’ vocals on the title track or the incorporation of drip/flow sounds of non-stagnant water into a Dire-Straits meet Richard Marx sort of mood experienced on ‘For the Water’, there is much to cherish here:

Rehearsed Living: The Lie is The Dream

We are in love with the latest tracks by one of our perennial favourites Rehearsed Living. There isn’t much that we haven’t said already about this Sheffield based Indie band. As always the work is exquisite and every track is a unique gem. Although their latest album can be downloaded for free at: http://rehearsedliving.bandcamp.com/album/the-lie-is-the-dream, we urge you to atleast make a contribution so as to encourage such rare and beautiful artistry. A few of our favourites:

The Airplanes: Paper Hearts

paper hearts

After giving us such joy with Summer Daydream about a year or more ago, Arkansas based indie rock band ‘The Airplanes’ are out with ‘Paper Hearts’ which so far is our top contender for ‘Song of the Year’. The peppy beat belies and simultaneously enhances the existential irony of warped expectations vs reality, metaphorically conveyed via clever lyrics such as ‘With paper hearts we were meant to be fair….’. Do yourself a favour and listen to this one and buy it:
