FrozenInMonochrome: Sunset

So, it is finally spring in 2018 and we are back with the groovy track ‘Sunset’ from FrozenInMonochrome’s upcoming Colors EP. It has a poppish rhythm but grungy vocals and a wavy loopy bass line which work very well together. Dark with cheerful undertones.. Like a sunset :).

A bit of info about the band:
Formed in July of 2014 in Dallas, FrozenInMonochrome is a one-man coldwave project formed by Steven Grant (as FroznMonokrome), also involved with the experimental dreampop and goth-infused Sialuk project alongside Basavriuk (of Dead Souls and Lake Milk), an experimental project with Kelly Sinclair, an occasional song with Les Modules Etranges, Osiris Module, Thalie Nemesis, etc., and the odd remix here and there.

Lovelace: Lands

DSC_0324_DxO-2

Rebecca Whitbread, who goes by the moniker ‘Lovelace’, has released her debut album Lands on July 29th. The album details a period in Lovelace’s life, which took her through many contrasting landscapes, both in literal and metaphorical terms. Electronic keyboard riffs, a gentle and almost lilting drum beat and a soothing yet crystal clear voice give the album an overall disconnected, dreamy and nostalgic vibe. This album is very autobiographical in the sense that it starts with a track called B. Man, which seems to be a reference to an incident some years ago when Lovelace bought a ticket for the Burning Man festival on a whim and boarded a plane without knowing anyone. Additionally, it references various significant friends, lovers and epiphanies that have shaped the musical journey that she has undertaken to follow her heart. These varied experiences give the album a very honest and relatable albeit experimental feeling which seems to work very well as a consequence of the juxtaposition with the almost disconnected vibe mentioned above. Lovelace now spends her time shuttling between my home city Berlin and London, with occasional trips to her hometown in Devon. She plays in a 5 member band piece band consisting of herself, Rebecca Whitbread, on Guitar and lead vocals, Hannah Murphy and Ruth Corey on backing vocals, Petter Grevelius on bass and Bernie Gardner on drums. A sample of their labor of love:

Verdensrommet: Aldri igjen EP

_DSC7455_DxO
The Norwegian indie-pop band Verdensrommet is back with another EP, and this time they’re joined by Emir Hindic, aka. Onge $ushimane (from the rap duo $ushi x Kobe). The EP features the track Aldri igjen (Never Again in English) and several remixes of the same. This is a track that essentially has no coherent structure or form and has random manifestations of multiple genres (electronica, ambient, hip hop, etc) coexisting and at times fighting for supremacy. It hits you hard and the remixes are as pleasingly diverse as chalk and cheese. Definitely not meant for a sunny afternoon stroll, but walk down some of the graffiti lined streets of a metropolis with this in your earphones after sunset and you’ll be one with your urbaniverse.
The whole EP can be streamed from: https://open.spotify.com/album/03dB87F294CPsspYKE0Ooa or the soundcloud link which you can figure out using the stuff we have embedded below.

Below are a few of our favourites from this EP:

Sillyboy: Stalker

During the glorious summer of 2012, when we started with this website, one of the first bands that we featured that made a profound impact on us was Sillyboy. Based out of Athens, Sillyboy’s dazzling incorporation of diverse musical styles under one umbrella in their first album ‘Nature of Things’ had us stoked for good reason. Every song was a masterpiece, which is rare for any album featuring more than 5 tracks and Nature of Things had double that number. They seem to have only gotten better while maintaining this knack of 100% song brilliance in their new album Stalker. The album deals with a controversial subject in a very interesting way, best described as easy going obsession and attempts to reveal an alternate point of view, subtly goading us to refrain from naively painting every action in black and white. In short, this album is a grey zone ‘Tour de force’, Bowie meets Depeche Mode, and I urge you to listen to it, spread the word, buy it (https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/sillyboy/id289180758) and make Sillyboy rich. Until that great purchasing decision that you absolutely will have to make, please enjoy the tracks here:

Bad Reed: Punch It

Punching it with their crushing debut EP are Bad Reed, Costa Chatzis on percussion, Austin Sharpe on bass, Sydney Sollazzo on vocals and keyboards, and Graham Walker on guitars. Hailing from small towns and diverse backgrounds, Bad Reed consists of members with varying music taste. This is evident on the EP as something with as few as 3 tracks manages to cover a wide spectrum of musical styles ranging from jazz blues to progressive rock. We thank our friends at Independent Music Promotions for sharing this with us and you can enjoy it here:

PLGRMS: Pieces

DSC_0359-1-2

Every once in a while there comes a song that reminds me of that wonderful quote from ‘A Clockwork Orange’ while the protagonist listened to Beethoven’s Ninth: ‘Oh bliss! Bliss and heaven! Oh, it was gorgeousness and gorgeousity made flesh. It was like a bird of rarest-spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now‘. I can’t phrase my praise for this layered beauty of a track from PLGRMS any better, so just listen to it and then listen to it again and again and again:

There is also a video for this track, which I unfortunately can’t access from Germany due to it being blocked by one of the most controversial authorities here ‘GEMA’. A link to the track, should you be located anywhere other than the fatherland:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbTHbErVWV4

A bit of info about the band: PLGRMS is a duo comprised of the talented Australian born, London-based singer-songwriter Toma Banjanin and accomplished Sydney songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Bowden. The track (shared above) is co-written and produced by Jimmy Lyell – one half of internationally-renowned electronic duo Flight Facilities – and also features The Preatures’ Luke Davison on drums.
